The first public biomethane injection point in Džūkste will be opened this summer

This summer, the first public biomethane injection point in Latvia, connected to the gas transmission network, will be opened in Džūkste. This will allow biomethane producers to deliver the gas they produce by truck and inject it into the common system even if there is no direct connection to the distribution or transmission network, according to the single gas transmission and storage system operator Conexus Baltic Grid ("Conexus"). This is an important step in Conexus' sustainable development strategy, promoting the integration of green energy and more efficient use of local resources.

The project is now actively underway with a view to commissioning the facility this summer. The design and construction of the biomethane feed-in point Džūkste is being carried out by Intra-GT Ltd. The construction supervision is provided by GF Birojs Ltd. and the construction design expertise is provided by Kiwa Latvia AS.

Works on the biomethane injection point in Džūkste are being carried out in four phases, covering both major engineering solutions and the construction of infrastructure. The first phase will consist of the construction of a gas pipeline communication cable, the second of an electricity supply connection. The third phase involves the construction of a technological equipment container building and a branch of the transmission gas pipeline, while the fourth phase will include the construction of the foundation, access roads and utilities.

"The biomethane injection point in Džūkste is an important Conexus project for several reasons. Firstly, it allows us to extend the functionality of our existing gas infrastructure by introducing technological solutions that further increase the efficiency of the system. Secondly, this project will diversify the opportunity for producers to inject biomethane into the unified natural gas system, opening up new opportunities for local green energy producers. Given the potential of biomethane, it is planned to establish such points in other parts of Latvia in the future, contributing to the development of sustainable energy in Latvia," said Uldis Bariss, Chairman of the Board of Conexus.

Once the facility is operational, biomethane producers will be able to deliver and inject the biomethane they produce into the gas transmission system. The biomethane injection point will operate in automatic mode, providing pressure relief, gas preheating, injection into the pipeline system, as well as metering and gas quality control.

The project is funded by the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility with a co-financing of EUR 1 500 000.
