New gas compression unit installed at Inčukalns Underground Gas Storage

At the end of March, the Solar Turbines Titan 130 gas compression unit, manufactured in the United States, was installed on the foundations of the Inčukalns Underground Gas Storage facility. The installation is an important step in the modernisation of the storage facility, which is being carried out as part of a European investment project of common interest. The new unit will significantly increase the efficiency and safety of the storage facility, allowing it to pump up to 15 million m³ of natural gas per day.

"The major storage modernisation project is nearing completion and one of the most important works was the installation of the new gas compression unit. This 120-tonne unit, equipped with a turbine engine and two centrifugal compressors, will significantly improve the efficiency of the natural gas flow. Although the unit is already installed on the ground, assembly and testing work will continue and full installation is planned by the end of 2025, when the overall modernisation project, which has been underway for several years, will be completed," said Uldis Bariss, Chairman of the Management Board of Conexus Baltic Grid, operator of the unified gas transmission and storage system.

The total investment in the repository improvement works amounts to €99.5 million, of which €44 million is covered by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
