EC presents the modernization project of Inčukalns Storage to strengthen the energy safety of the whole Europe

The unified natural gas transmission and storage system operator JSC "Conexus Baltic Grid” (Conexus) participates in the event "PCI Energy Day” arranged by European Commission and devoted to energy infrastructure projects in Brussels from 19-20 March. Conexus familiarizes with Inčukalns Underground Gas Storage (UGS) modernization project which plays an important role to strengthen the energy safety of Latvia and the whole Europe. 

The conference and exhibition "PCI Energy Days” are devoted to practical implementation of projects of common interest (PCI). Project promoters will share also experience how to create a safe and environmentally friendly infrastructure in future by means of innovative solutions by involving the local communities and looking for new approaches for financing.

Conexus has received a co-financing of 50% from European Union (EU)  Connecting Europe Facility to implement Inčukalns UGS development project.  Total investments of the projects are 88 million euro. It's anticipated that the project is implemented to 2025  channelling the resources to three directions of storage modernization - modernization of surface infrastructure, modernization of gas bores, modernization of the existing gas infrastructure. 

Zane Kotāne, Chairwoman of the Board of JSC "Conexus Baltic Grid” informs: "Project implementation is critically important for the energy safety and independence of Latvia and the whole region, because we improve Inčukalns UGS technical infrastructure and operational safety of equipment within the framework of this project. This facilitates the integration of gas market and allows improving the gas flows that currently are isolated from the rest European Union thus facilitating the natural gas transit through Latvian natural gas transmission system."

It is planned that "PCI Energy Days” in Brussels are attended by the Director General for Energy at the European Commission Dominique Ristori, Commissioner for Climate Action & Energy Miguel Arias Cañete, Chair of the Committee for Environment of European Parliament Adina-Ioana Vălean, Deputy Director-General for Energy  of European Commission Gerassimos Thomas, Director for Energy Politics Megan Richardson.

The conference "PCI Energy Days” is organized by EC Directorate General for Energy that is responsible for EU energy politics - safe, sustainable and competitive energy for the Europe.
